From patterns to the gallery

Some ideas don’t emerge all at once. They reveal themselves gradually, remain quietly in the background for a while, and patiently wait for the right moment to take shape.

For me, that was the case with the series Natural Patterns, a collection of artworks inspired by the patterns, rhythms, and structures I discovered while travelling through the natural landscapes of Australia and New Zealand.

Looking at what nature has already created

When I travel and go for walks, I notice that my attention is repeatedly drawn to the same things. Not only to the vast landscapes, but especially to the details. The patterns of grains of sand on the beach created by tiny crabs, the lines in a mountain landscape, and the ripples in the water, constantly forming new patterns.

I often try to imprint these images in my memory. They give me a sense of wonder. Of calm. Of curiosity.

Two years of searching, experimenting, and starting over

More than two years ago, it was time to take action. What followed was a process of more than two years, during which I explored how I could translate these natural rhythms and structures into my own visual language.

This is how the Natural Patterns series came into being, based on landscapes in Australia and New Zealand. A series in which observation and wonder come together. An exploration of repetition, rhythm, and harmony.

The first artwork in the Natural Patterns collection

Each artwork consists of five separate canvases. Four smaller works come together to form the pattern and can be hung in three different configurations. This means that not only the composition changes, but also the way you look at the work.

The fifth, larger canvas shows the landscape from which the pattern originated. Together, the five works tell the complete story: from the bigger picture to the smallest details.

Exhibiting at KunstWerk in Utrecht

Until now, I have kept the series together.

Not because I didn’t want to sell the works, but because the series was not yet complete.

From Wednesday, 26 August 2026, that will change.

The Natural Patterns collection will then be exhibited at KunstWerk at Wittevrouwenstraat 34 in Utrecht. For the first time, the works will leave my studio and find a new place where others can discover them, and where the individual artworks will also be available for purchase.

That feels special. As if I am completing a long journey and can finally share the story with others.

A place where craftsmanship comes alive

During my first visit to KunstWerk, Ivanka and Jiska showed me around their framing workshop and gallery. To me, it felt like being in a candy store.

Everywhere you look, you can see the love for their craft. In the attention to materials and the care with which each artwork is treated. That is precisely why this collaboration feels so right.

If you would like to see my artworks in person, or if you are looking for a beautiful frame for a work that is dear to you, a visit to Wittevrouwenstraat 34 is definitely worthwhile. At the front of the KunstWerk workshop, you’ll find the small gallery, which is free to visit during opening hours.

Perhaps you will recognise something from a walk you once took. Maybe a pattern will remind you of a journey, a landscape, or a moment when you were completely absorbed in your surroundings.

Above all, I hope the series does the same thing that nature itself does: invites you to slow down, pause to appreciate the beauty of small details, and make space for wonder once again.
