Freedom to create: my atelier in the former prison Wolvenplein

Sometimes a place shapes the way you work. Not only because of the space it offers, but because of the story that lives within its walls.

My studio is located in Wolvenplein, the former prison in the heart of Utrecht. Once a place where freedom was taken away. Nowadays it has become a place where creativity, connection, and entrepreneurship can flourish.

Good morning she-wolf

When I arrive at Wolvenplein in the morning, in my mind I always greet the she-

wolf statue in front of the building. Afterwards I make my way through the maze of corridors to my atelier. It has become a small ritual, a moment when I leave the outside world behind and step into my own creative bubble.

Although I've been working here since early 2024, the building still feels extraordinary. Every single day.

Its history is still present. You can sense it in the architecture, the thick walls, the long corridors, and the rows of heavy doors. The walls will never fully reveal everything that happened here, and perhaps that's for the best. Yet the past remains an integral part of this place. That is precisely what makes it so special.

A place where dreams take shape

Nowadays Wolvenplein is home to makers, designers, artists, and a wonderfully diverse community of entrepreneurs. People who, each in their own way, have chosen to pursue work that is true to who they are.

I meet many entrepreneurs who in a way lead a double life. Alongside a job or another business, they intentionally make room for their creativity. They choose not only to dream but also to act on those dreams. That energy is contagious.

It feels remarkable that a place once defined by restricted freedom has become a place where so many people discover the freedom to develop new ideas, experiment, and follow their own path. Wolvenplein is not only where I paint to me. It is also where I continually rediscover the freedom to create.

Art is best experienced in person

Although much of my work can be viewed online, art is something that is truly

meant to be experienced in person. The texture of the canvas or paper, the layers of paint, and the way colours shift as the light changes are difficult to capture on a screen.

That's why I would love to welcome you to my atelier at Wolvenplein.
